Catholic Evidence Guild
The Catholic Evidence Guild is an international association of Roman Catholic lay faithful who research and present clear and compelling explanations of the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. Their objective is to address incorrect impressions about the Church and her teachings through clear and compelling apologetics.
Initially limited to “street preaching” and proclamations in the public square (popularized by the likes of Frank Sheed and his contemporaries in the 1920s), the Catholic Evidence Guild mostly went dormant during the post-World War II era.
The reins of apologetics were handed over to Bishop Fulton Sheen and other charismatic preachers who would take the message of Jesus Christ to the airwaves through radio and television.
In the present digital age largely lived online, still other apostolates have emerged to take up the reigns of popular apologetics, including Ascension Press, the Augustine Institute, the Institute of Catholic Culture, Scepter Publishers, Sophia Press, Thomistic Institute, and Word on Fire.
But there remains a need for personal apologetics and evangelization—not only in streets and the public square, but in assembly rooms, boardrooms, family rooms, jails and prison cells across the country. Hence why the Catholic Evidence Guild is seeing a revitalization and a proliferation of its chapters. Becket More seeks to kindle the fires of renewal of this great apostolate, and is its primary promoter in the United States.
